Fort Delaware History Program
This program is open to Mr. Giansanti's senior cadets, then junior cadets and will run February through May of the school year.
Cadets should not be involved in any other activities. This program will require a commitment of one day a week after school and one weekend day a week. This schedule is subject to change.
The purpose of this program is to provide students with an in-depth experience revolving around garrison life at Fort Delaware. The cadets that participate in this program will be immersed in U.S. Civil War history and life. Lessons will focus on history, science, mathematics, society, historiography. As part of the program, the cadet will become first person interpreters at the site.
Experts in the fields of Civil War military methods, civilian society, fort architecture, science, and living history techniques will present lessons that have classroom as well as hands-on activity components. Military classes and activities will give the cadets a thorough understanding of military customs, traditions, tactics, drill and routines of the U.S. infantry and artillery. Other classes will focus on the science and technology of the period such as the history and use of black powder, water desalination procedures, and metallurgy. Architectural, engineering, and mathematics lessons will be conducted as the construction and restoration of the fort is discussed. Classes dealing with foods, social customs, arts and entertainment will be conducted as well. In these lessons, the cadets will prepare period foods, learn dances popular at the time, and interact with each other in a manner deemed appropriate for the time under study.
